Without any administrative privileges, many applications may not work correctly. This is not a serious issue if you work on your own computer, but it is a different matter when it comes to an office computer, on which you may need to work with a limited user account. RunAsTool allows users with limited accounts to run applications in administrator mode. It can relieve system an administrator from coming over to a computer and typing in their password, so that a user can launch a certain application.

The application is absolutely free and it can be used on Windows XP and all later editions, including Windows 10. Its components can be extracted directly from a ZIP archive, so you don't have to go through an installation process. The hardware requirements are insignificant and there is no need to install any prerequisite tools.

RunAsTool can be launched in Edit or Limited mode. By default, it will start in Edit mode and it will ask you to select an admin account and type in its password each time you run it. Once your password is accepted, the application will display its main user interface, on which you can target specific applications and choose how they should be launched.

All you have to do is drag and drop an application's executable or shortcut over the left half of the user interface, select the icon and make your tweaks on the right half. While an icon is selected, the application will display its full path, working directory and other details, which you can change. You can also find options for running the selected application as an administrator, with default rights or to run it as a limited user. Additionally, you can set the application to check for file size before it runs anything and to hide, minimize or maximize its window.

You can simply double click a shortcut, on the application's interface, to run it in the selected mode. To prevent limited users from making changes to your settings, you can switch the application to limited mode, which displays only the list of shortcuts, without any configuration options. In this particular mode, the application won't ask for any passwords at startup. Alternatively, you may create new desktop shortcuts, from RunAsTool's interface, so users don't have to run the application each time they wish to launch something with admin rights.

With its smart functionality, RunAsTool can make a system administrator's job significantly easier.

Pros

RunAsTool's functionality is straight forward. It can be set to run applications in three different modes, with or without parameters. The application is lightweight, free and it doesn't need to be installed.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to mention.
